Creating a culture of nature connection and awareness – For adults, families and youth
Norval Outdoor School | August 25-29, 2010
Join the P.I.N.E. Project and Mark Morey, Saskia Vanderhoop, Dan Gardoqui, and a dozen other talented nature educators from New England and Ontario for a five-day experiential education workshop designed to help individuals and families connect more meaningfully to nature. Supported by experienced teachers and a community container, (guides/facilitators) you will have the opportunity to:
- Experience, understand and relate more directly to the natural world
- Develop traditional and indigenous outdoor education and survival skills
- Gain tools to empower future generations to understand and care for the environment
- Experience the power of cultural tools such as storytelling, rites of passage and ceremony
- Learn about “Cultural Mentoring” and the power it has to create change
Experiencing the Art of Mentoring
The Art of Mentoring connects people from across Ontario by integrating nature based education, community building, personal development and ecological stewardship into a five-day workshop.
Through hands-on learning, adult participants will gain the knowledge, tools, and skills needed to create a powerful culture of natural connection in the home, workplace and community. Concurrent children’s and youth camps will be woven into the fabric of the adult experience with nightly sharing of stories and intergenerational programming.
Experiential learning techniques for adults include:
- Identifying and using wild edible plants
- Developing sensory awareness
- Expanding naturalist knowledge
- Structuring lesson plans around nature connection
- Facilitating motivational learning (Encouraging passion based learning)
- Creating unstructured play by design
- Incorporating community elders.
Activities for children and youth include:
- Nature based programming
- Team building exercises and camp games
- Wilderness and outdoor survival skills.
Adult workshop package: $550 plus HST
Children and youth workshop package $220 plus HST
Packages include meals and a limited number of cabins and wall tents are available, with priority given to young families and seniors. Free camping space and tent/sleeping bag rentals are also available.

Registration and Forms
For both Adult and Children’s programs at the Art of Mentoring, a $100.00 Deposit is required to hold your registration. The remainder will be required by the start of the Course. Parents are welcome to bring infants along to the course, but must have a babysitter, or parent tandem along for special care for kids outside the 4-13 year old age range during course hours when needed.
